This is when I realized I have the best and easiest hot dog bun recipe:
I was driving down to the supermarket with the grocery list going through my head: hot dogs, chicken wings, potatoes, and hot dog buns. Then it hit me: I have the best and easiest hot dog bun recipe!
This is the recipe I always use to make hamburger buns, and it dawned on me on my way to buy the hot dog buns and hot dogs that I should just use the hamburger bun recipe and simply shape it into logs, instead of balls!
My original dinner menu plan was falafel, french fries, and pita, which my children are usually very happy to have for dinner. So when Naama came home from school and asked: “what’s for dinner?” I answered Falafel and her response wasn’t very enthusiastic. Next on, I wanted to see what Ayala’s reaction to dinner would be. Ayala’s response was pretty much similar to Naama’s. Last in the dinner poll was Yishai… Nope, Yishai didn’t feel like having Falafel and french fries either.
Since I didn’t feel like spending time making dinner that none of my children were interested in eating, I had to think of another dinner menu. Trying to think of a supper menu that doesn’t take too much time to make, I came up with barbecued chicken wings and hot dogs. I could have bought the store-bought hot dog buns, which are blah… It would have saved me just a few minutes. Or I could spend the 5 to 10 minutes adding the ingredients of the best and easiest hot dog bun recipe to my mixer. A decision was made: homemade hot dog buns it is!
Follow these super easy steps for the best hot dog bun recipe:
Preheat your oven to 2100 Celsius / 4100 Fahrenheit
Add 3 1/2 cups of flour (I used whole wheat flour) add one egg, 2 TBS dry or fresh yeast, 1/3 cup of oil, 1/4 cup of sugar, one teaspoon salt, and a drop over a cup of warm water.
Mix all of the ingredients until it forms into a dough.
Cover a pan with a baking sheet and dust the surface with flour.
Immediately divide the hot dog bun dough into 10 pieces and roll into logs. If the dough is a bit sticky, you can use some of the flour that you used to sprinkle your baking sheet with.
Tip: Just for the fun of it, and because I enjoy playing around with the presentation of the food I bake, I cut three slits in each hot dog bun. Not a must, but just adds a cool look.
